RHS Harlow Carr inspires budding artists

A recent trip to one of Yorkshire’s most beautiful gardens has helped inspire art students from Cundall Manor School. The year 9 pupils visited RHS Harlow Carr gardens in Harrogate as part of their study into natural forms. The youngsters took inspiration from the Royal Horticultural Society Garden and had the advantage of some late summer sunshine later in the day. Sarah Pearson, Head of Art at Cundall Manor School organised the trip. She said: “Harlow Carr has organic forms in abundance and offered great opportunities to draw a wide range of plant forms, the floral displays and vegetable garden being of particular interest. “We spent the morning sketching in the grounds and after lunch the everyone took part in printmaking workshops in the Bramall learning centre. During the workshops we looked at the work of William Morris, the famous Art and Crafts artist and designer, and then used our own sketches to produce prints inspired by his use of motifs and symmetry.” She added: “We are lucky to have such a great resource on our doorstep and my thanks go to the team at Harlow Carr for making it such an enjoyable experience.” The pupils will continue to focus on natural forms and will produce work for display across the school in the coming term. Parents are being invited to come and see some of the fantastic artwork on display at the school for themselves at our next Open Morning on Saturday 15thOctober from 10am. Team building scales new heights

Aerial Extreme at Bedale proved the perfect setting for pupils from Cundall Manor’s Upper School to get to know one another as part of their annual team building day. The teambuilding day allows new pupils to the Upper School the chance to work together with some of the older pupils as they work through problems and challenges as they complete the activity day. The pupils, all aged between 13 and 16 years old, had to work together to complete and number of tasks and competed in teams for the top prize. Sara Hall, Head of Upper School, said: “The children worked really well together. You could see their confidence growing after each task. She added: “It is really important that we have the ability to allow our pupils to develop their leadership, organisational and communication skills from an early age. Days like these are a fantastic way to consolidate their skills while having fun and making new friends.” Part of the tasks including completing a course on a Segway, a search and rescue mission for a pilot which involved working as a team to cross difficult terrain via pullies and a-frames. Team 10 proved triumphant over the course of the day with Head Boy Oliver Hartmann, Ben Hunter, Ethan Watkins, Annabel Hartley, Tom Wilson and Maddie Pick coming out on top. The school, located between Ripon and Thirsk, will be hosting an open morning showcasing all that the school has to offer on Saturday 15 October from 10am. Chocolate lesson a sweet success

A recent visit from two local chocolate experts proved incredibly popular for youngsters from Cundall Manor School. Claire King and Scarlett Latham from York Cocoa House gave a masterclass in chocolate making much to the delight of the local school children. The special guests delivered a masterclass and presentation which explored the story of chocolate and its journey to becoming the world’s favourite sweet treat. The event was all part of the school’s annual languages day, a celebration of all things multi-cultural, this year taking on a particularly food orientated theme. Children then enjoyed a chocolate lolly making tutorial in their forms before sampling a wide variety of world cuisine. The children also learned about pre-Colombian art and saw a video on the Inca lands of gold. Claire King, from the York Cocoa House said: “Workshops like this is a great way for children to experience what it takes to make chocolate. We showed them how to temper chocolate and assisted with the lolly making. She added: “It was great to see the children ask relevant questions and that they have clearly gone away having learnt something but also with a solid tangible product which they will enjoy.” The school’s language day also saw prizes for the best dressed pupil with a wide range of entries taking in inspiration from far and wide. Head of Modern Foreign Languages at Cundall Manor School, Katy Hunzinger, helped organise the event. She said: “The outfits were splendid to see. So much colour and innovation on show. I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who took part and made the day so special.” To find out more about the school or to request a prospectus pack, call 01423 360 200 or visit www.cundallmanorschool.com

Life Centre Trip gives fresh perspective on science

Pupils from Cundall Manor School recently had the chance to get under nature’s skin with an unforgettable trip to the Life Centre in Newcastle. Youngsters from the school, based near Topcliffe in North Yorkshire, experienced a unique viewpoint as they saw some of the world’s most spectacular animals preserved through plastination. Form 4 tutor, Hannah Sadler organised the excursion. She said: “The Animals Live exhibition was amazing, with real animals preserved to reveal various parts of their anatomy!” This unique view has been developed thanks to the science of plastination, invented by Dr Gunther von Hagens. Each animal has been painstakingly preserved allowing visitors to see what lies beneath nature’s skin in intricate detail. She added: “Life Centre was great. We watched a science show all about food and the science behind it, enjoyed the 4D motion ride, extracted DNA from a kiwi and linked woolly mammoths to their closest living relative through gel electrophoresis.” The exhibit showcases over 100 real animal specimens and allows visitors to see in detail the inner workings of animals and the systems that allow them to live, thrive and survive. The exhibition also shows how different animals have evolved both in their anatomy and their organ function to their natural habitats such as the elephant’s trunk or the giraffe’s long neck. Pupils from boarding house at Cundall Manor School, based near Topcliffe, North Yorkshire, buried the time capsule to mark national boarding week. Items include a school prospectus, yearbook, calendar, a recent sports day itinerary, coins, a mobile phone, the Cundall cookbook, a school scarf and a letter from a pupil at the school. Hundreds of other schools in the BSA simultaneously took part in the event. The time capsules will be opened at the 75thanniversary of the BSA in 2041. Housemaster, Gary Coates, was pleased to commemorate the event. He said: “The Golden Jubilee of the BSA is a big event. For us as a boarding school, it allows us to join in with the celebration nationwide.” He added: “It was really interesting asking our boarders what they would like to put in the time capsule.
