Trip to the seaside proves fun for Form 4

Sasha from Form 4 describes the recent trip to the East Yorkshire coast to study coastal erosion and the history of the Great British seaside. On Thursday 22nd September Form 4 went to Flamborough Head as we have been learning about cliffs and erosion in Geography. Unfortunately, when we arrived at Flamborough, the tide was in which meant that we could not explore the caves but we still had a wonderful time fossil hunting and paddling in the freezing cold sea. After this we had a short drive to Bridlington to visit a traditional coastal town. We all really enjoyed building sand castles and paddling in the now warmer sea at Bridlington. Lastly, we had a look inside a beach hut as we had been learning about them in History and we could ask a few questions about what was inside. What a lovely day we had.

Two schoolgirls from Cundall Manor School are celebrating reaching the finals of the ISA Gundog Challenge. Tallulah Lascelles and Hattie Attwood, both reached the final of the Independent Schools Association Gundog Challenge at Weston Park in Shropshire earlier this week. The pair progressed into the final following an impressive showing in qualifying rounds. Both of the girls managed to be one of two selected for the final of eight contestants from four larger qualifying groups. Hattie placed 4thoverall and Tullulah 5th. Hattie also managed to claim the ‘Judges Choice Award,’ an accolade which comes with the enviable prize of a solid silver dog whistle. The competition was held at the annual Midland Game Fair which took place on the 17th & 18th September at Weston Park in Shropshire. John Robertson, owner of The Gundog Company, enjoyed showing the enthusiastic crowd the tricks of the trade. He said: “The purpose of the competition and show is to allow younger children to gain a knowledge of the gun dog and how they work. “By the time I am finished explaining how they work and what they do, the children have a good knowledge and are eager to put it into action with the dogs.” The competition is run in association with the ISA and John has so far visited nearly forty schools up and down the country. New wave of research for GCSE pupils

A recent trip to Swaledale provided pupils from Cundall Manor School with the opportunity to conduct some valuable field work into the local river system. GCSE pupils from the school benefited from some kind weather conditions as the investigated how a river changes as it moves downstream. The youngsters performed an analysis on FIVE sites of Cogden Gill, a tributary of the River Swale, in an attempt to ascertain whether the Gill follows Bradshaw’s River Model which argues that rivers will get wider, deeper and faster as they make their way towards the sea. Pupils will now use this data to complete their Geography GCSE controlled assessment worth 25% of their final grade. Miss Stovin who led the excursion added: “Our pupils behaved themselves impeccably. We hope that everyone enjoyed the trip.”

Science sparks fun for Form 2

A recent trip to the Life Centre in Newcastle sparked excitement across Form 2 as they enjoyed a day of all things science. Form 2’s very own correspondent, Nancy, tells us about her experience on a day of exploration. When we first arrived we went into The Curiosity Zone, this was all about interacting with science and doing mini experiments. Then we went into the Science Theatre where we watched a food workshop where we dropped a jelly baby into some heated chemicals and it gave off a lot of smoke and noise. Matilda also ate a mealworm! We did a workshop on electrical circuits where we made several circuits ourselves, then we learnt about conductors and insulators through a series of experiments.  We even made a circuit using us as wires!  Afterwards we had lunch and the lights changed colour! Then we went into The Brain Zone where we did lots of fun interactive things to help us understand our brains better. I learnt some interesting facts and enjoyed the optical illusions. Later on we watched a show in the planetarium which was all about why and how we measure different units of time the way we do. We went on an incredible 4D motion ride about monsters, we even got sprayed with water! Later we went to the gift shop and we all brought things for us and our families.  We even saw the Angel of the North on the way there and back.

Fire! Fire! Workshop Sparks Interest in the Great Fire

Children from Pre-Prep have set their imagination ablaze following an interactive workshop into the Great Fire of London. Pre-Prep pupils from Cundall Manor School were treated to a day of activities including a 17th Century fire-fighting workshop and investigating the role of the plague doctor in 1666 London. The workshop was led by Real History Alive’s Russell and Dawn Bark. The Derbyshire husband and wife, showcased one of their ten historical and science educational workshops to the youngsters. Schools and museums across the country have joined in the 350th anniversary commemorations of the great fire. Dawn said: “The activities we offer are hand’s on. They get the children to immerse themselves in history and give them a feel for how it was to live in 1666.” The day began with a 45 minute performance which introduced the Great Fire and some of the century’s celebrities including Samuel Pepys, whose memoirs helped detail the fire. Pupils from the school had the exciting task of dressing up in clothes from the era and learning a market square dance. Pre-Prep teacher, Kylie Potter, organised the event. She said: “The children had a great day learning all about the great fire. It was wonderful to get them dressed up and involved in the activities.” Among the other activities enjoyed by the children included recreating medieval London through map making.
