A taste of enterprise for business students

Pupils from Cundall Manor School are cooking up a taste for enterprise as they launch a pop-up restaurant. The year 9 pupils are taking on the challenge as part of the school’s business studies course. The 14 year-olds have been working on organising the annual event which sees nearly 50 parents, friends and family visit the restaurant. The youngsters develop their own business including the purchasing of the materials, advertising the event and even devising their own menu, cooking and serving the food. The visitors are then asked to pay for the meal as to how much they think it is worth. Debbie Partington, Head of Business at the school, set them the task. She said: “Our annual pop-up restaurant has regularly proved the highlight for many of our pupils on our business course.” “The restaurant allows them to take control from the beginning and deliver profits based on how well they perform.” The pupils received fantastic feedback from the guests who enjoyed a full 3 course meal at the school. One guest, Chris Jay, said: “The food was very nice and we had a great evening.” The profits from the event will be used to by the students to arrange a trip away, while any excess cash will be given to a charity of their choice. Sweet success for language morning

Today we had another fun day across the school as the school embraced all things cultural as the annual languages morning entertained all. The school had special guests from the York Cocoa House who explored the story of chocolate and its journey to becoming the world’s favourite sweet treat. Children then enjoyed a chocolate lolly making tutorial in their forms before sampling a wide variety of world cuisine. The children also learned about pre-Colombian art and saw a video on the Inca lands of gold.

Flower arranging buds interest in youngsters

A masterclass in flower arranging from local business owner, Susie Hart, sparked an interest in the skill for budding florists at a leading North Yorkshire school. The masterclass is all part of preparations for the 10 and 11 years old passing out parade as the Form 4 pupils enter the next stage of their education. The group of over FORTY pupils were shown the basics of flower arranging and preparation and constructed a variety of table decorations for their event. Stuart Bayne, Head of Forms 1-4 at Cundall Manor School, near Topcliffe, said: “It was a super event for our youngsters. A huge thank you to Susie for dedicating her time and effort to show our pupils just how much skill and thought is involved in flower arranging.” He added: “All the children really enjoyed the masterclass. Everyone got involved and produced some fantastic creations.” The passing out event will be the culmination of a series of events in which the pupils have learned more about etiquette, communication skills, manners, conversation and how to host an event and talk to adults. The flower arrangements will take pride of place among the light refreshments at the event. Stuart added: “The children are really looking forward to showing off all they have learnt and would like to say thank you to everyone who has helped support them throughout the year.” To find out more about Cundall Manor School or to book a taster day, visit www.cundallmanorschool.com or call 01423 360 200.

Beavers investiture for 1st Cundall Colony

School children from a leading North Yorkshire School stood side by side as they were sworn into the Scouting Movement, and officially became the first Beavers to join Cundall 1st Colony. Nearly two dozen young pupils from Cundall Manor School, near Topcliffe, proudly made their Beaver Scout promise.  They stood up in front of their Beaver leaders, parents, teachers and invited special guests, to receive their neckerchiefs and woggles as Cundall 1st Beaver Colony was officially sworn in. Before the ceremony, the 23 children, aged just five, six and seven years, took the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge of the Scouting Family and show their guests a glimpse of what being a Beaver involves. In their Lodges, named after nearby rivers, the children stood up to talk about key figures in the movement such as Robert Baden Powell and the very popular, Bear Grylls.  The invited guests were not sitting down for long as they were invited to join their children in a game of Beaver Football.  To bring the proceedings to a close, the young boys and girls brought the house down with the Cundall 1st rendition of the Beaver Call. Cundall 1st Beavers Colony is one of four Beaver groups in the Easingwold District and the District Commissioner, Andrew Garner, was invited to attend the special investiture ceremony and to present the children with their neckerchiefs. Andrew said: “It was an absolute delight to welcome the 23 new Beavers of 1st Cundall Manor Scout Group to the family of Scouting.  We now have more young people than ever enjoying Scouting in the Easingwold area thanks to the commitment and efforts of our hardworking volunteers.” Stuart Bayne, Cundall 1st Cub Scout Leader, who oversees the two Scouting packs at the school, said: “It was an honour to invest so many Beavers into our brand new Colony here at 1st Cundall Manor Scout Group. The Group started just over a year ago, with the Cub section, after it became apparent that some children were missing the opportunity to go to Cubs elsewhere due to the extended school day at Cundall. The Cub Pack is at full strength now and thanks to our inspirational and energetic new leaders, the Beaver Colony is also doing tremendously well.” Stuart is on the look-out for help to set up and support a Scout Pack at the school.  A large number of the current Cub Scouts are due to move up to Scouts in the next school year.
