Duke of Edinburgh Award

At Cundall Manor School, the Duke of Edinburgh’s (DofE) Bronze Award is a compulsory part of the Year 9 curriculum, giving every pupil the opportunity to develop confidence, resilience and independence through practical challenges and outdoor experiences. The award reflects the very heart of a Cundall education: encouraging young people to embrace challenge, discover their strengths and grow into capable, compassionate individuals.

Recognised by schools, colleges, universities and employers across the UK, the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award encourages young people to learn new skills, contribute to their community and demonstrate the commitment, perseverance and resilience that are valued far beyond school.

EARLY YEARS FOUNDATION STAGE

What is The Duke of Edinburgh Award?

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is one of the UK’s leading youth achievement programmes. Founded by HRH Prince Philip in 1956, it inspires young people to develop essential life skills through practical, enjoyable activities.

To achieve each Award level, participants complete four sections: Physical, Skills, Volunteering and an Expedition.

At Cundall Manor, pupils can work towards:

  • Bronze – Year 9
  • Silver – Years 10–11

We have also had a lot of students successfully go on to complete and receive their Gold Award at St James’ palace after enjoying starting their Duke of Edinburgh journey so successfully here at Cundall Manor.

OUTDOOR ADVENTURES

Expeditions

To prepare for their Bronze and Silver expeditions, pupils take part in weekly training throughout the year, developing skills in navigation, first aid and campcraft. Bronze begins in the Michaelmas Term of Year 9 and concludes with the qualifying expedition at the end of the Summer Term. Silver is completed in the Michaelmas Term of Year 11. Expeditions take place in either the Yorkshire Dales or the North York Moors, giving pupils the opportunity to experience two outstanding national landscapes.
