Pupils to write a new chapter in the school’s green future

Pupils to write a new chapter in the school’s green future Pupils have decided to write a new chapter in the school’s future by ensuring that all plastic and metal waste office supplies are now recycled. The green-minded pupils are on a mission to turn Cundall green and ensure that all waste office plastics and metals are able to be recycled. The Zero Waste scheme is run in conjunction with TerraCycle and allows a host of items to be recycled and turned into other plastic and metal products. Form 5 pupils will take the lead on this project with the hope that no office waste makes it to landfill by the end of term. The programme allows small plastic or metal discarded office supplies such as pens, highlighters, pencil sharpeners, staplers, hole punchers, plastic folders, and file pockets amongst other things, to be recycled. Miss Bradshaw will be overseeing the Form 5 pupil’s efforts. She said: “With nearly 400 pupils using a variety of plastic and metal products daily, this one change could have a major impact.” She added: “The Zero Waste Programme is a wonderful way we can make a positive difference to our environment.” “How plastic is recycled is becoming more high profile across the world and hopefully we can do our bit and encourage every one of our pupils and their parents to think about what they do with plastic when they no longer need it.” TerraCycle are committed to ensuring no product they collect is incinerated or put to landfill. The company uses circular methods (reuse, upcycling or recycling) for repurposing the waste.

A Test of Endurance

Several lengths of the pool, a speedy ride around the grounds, and a dash towards the finishing line is all in a day’s work for Cundall Manor pupils. For over 200 pupils from the North Yorkshire school, the second annual Cundall Manor Triathlon proved a gruelling test of stamina, endurance and commitment. The pupils aged between seven and 13, took on the challenge laid down by the school’s sports department on a warm September afternoon. Head of Girl’s Games, Mrs Bessey, said many pupils had previously excelled in the individual pursuits but until last year never had the opportunity to combine the sports together. She said: “Each discipline within the Triathlon is a unique challenge. Our pupils had the chance to test themselves in each area and compete against each other in the pool, on their bikes and on foot.” She added: “Everyone certainly enjoyed the day. We are already a very active school and this was a superb opportunity for some of our younger pupils to try their hand at a new discipline, something which they did in typical Cundall fashion.” “Since our first triathlon event last year, some of our pupils have taken to competing in triathlons outside of school, which is a clear indicator of the event’s success.” The event was first inspired by Yorkshire’s own Brownlee brothers and youngsters from the sporty school embraced the daunting course in front of an appreciative crowd of parents, pupils and staff. GCSE pupils to get a head start on exam marathon

Year 11 pupils have benefited from a head start to their GCSE preparations following a dedicated day of study skills and revision techniques. Thornton yesterday (Tuesday 11 September) held a ‘Growth Mindset’ event which encouraged Year 11 pupils to challenge the way they prepare for their upcoming exams. Sue O’Leary-Hall, the Founder and Academic Director of regional educational specialists, Thesan Coaching and Training, led the session. Sue, who has 20 years’ experience as an outstanding teacher and senior leader, encouraged pupils to prepare for their exams as if it’s a marathon and not a sprint. Sue said: “The new exam system is placing greater pressure than ever on young people as a result of increasing academic rigour, a grading system where the top grade exceeds the previous A* standard and the abolition of coursework.  It is vital for pupils to learn how to manage a complex and demanding workload, as well as looking after their own physical and emotional well-being throughout the GCSE marathon.” Pupils were also taught effective revision techniques and approaches to independent learning alongside how to manage stress and keep calm at pivotal moments. Sue, who has previously held the roles of Director of Teaching and Learning, Head of Sixth Form and Head of English in her teaching career, added: “As ever, I have been enormously impressed by the positivity and commitment to succeed demonstrated by Cundall’s Year 11 pupils.  They should be able to put the strategies they have learned today into immediate effect to give them the very best chance of achieving highly next summer.” The school also invited parents to participate in a tailored session on how they can help ensure their children are as well prepared as possible to conquer the exam season challenge. Elsewhere, Thesan and Cundall Manor School have been working in partnership to help raise awareness of the importance of well-being across the school community. Dr Emma Dixon, a Consultant Clinical Psychologist with 20 years’ experience of working in Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS), has been on hand to help promote self-care and emotional well-being and to help pupils reflect on their self-awareness and put in place strategies to cope with stress and to help develop their resilience. From Autumn 2020, Health Education (including a special focus on mental health, well-being and resilience) will be a statutory requirement in all primary and secondary schools in England.  Cundall Manor is already leading the field in this area by providing specialist training for all senior school staff at the start of term through Thesan Coaching and Training.  The ‘Supporting Pupil’s Emotional Health and Well-Being’ bespoke training session draws on the latest psychological research, as well as being specifically tailored to enable staff to support individual pupils at the school.

John Sample, Joint Head at Cundall Manor School, said: “I would like to pass on my congratulations to our Year 11 students for their wonderful achievements.” “Every year we see how hard our pupils have worked and their commitment to achieving their very best.” “All our pupils should be very proud of their results and should know that their preparation for life after school has been of the highest standard.” He added: “This is a great set of GCSE results for our pupils and the school, despite the new tougher exams. Our pupils can now leave us very well equipped for their future destinations as well-rounded individuals with an enviable set of exam results to take them forward. All of us at Cundall wish them the very best of luck with their studies.” Among the school pupils celebrating their results was Sarah Sullivan who achieved the equivalent of ELEVEN 9 and 8 grades with an impressive 8 GCSEs at grade 9. Talking of receiving her results, Sarah said: “I am really happy with my grades.” Adding: “Cundall has been great. I’ve loved it all.” Looking at becoming an economist, Sarah will study Economics, Chemistry, Maths and French at A-level with a view to reading Economics at university after Sixth Form. It was a great day for Kit, Henry and Ben who all secured their places at Bootham School in York following a strong showing in their results. Kit, who hopes to become an entrepreneur after Sixth Form, said he was “over the moon with his results” and is looking forward to starting his A-Levels in Psychology, Philosophy and Business at Bootham. New Reception Officially Opened

Cundall Manor School is guaranteeing pupils, parents and visitors a warm welcome this Autumn following the opening of a new dedicated Reception building. The building is the latest addition to the school grounds and was officially declared open on Tuesday (28 August 2018), following a 6-month project. The new Reception has been designed by architects George F. White and is the second addition to the school in as many years following hot on the heels of a significant investment in FOUR new classrooms to the Senior School. Sir Thomas Ingilby, Chair of Governors at the school, officially opened the building. Sir Thomas said: “First impressions are vitally important in any business and the new Visitor Reception building sends out a strong message: that Cundall Manor is a thriving, forward-thinking school that offers a warm welcome to all” Joint Head at the School, John Sample, said: “The new building will act as a one-stop shop for our community and visitors to the school. Parents have watched the building grow from the foundations over the past term and I am sure they will appreciate the difference it will make to the running of the school.” A select group of governors, staff and interested parties gathered to witness the opening of the building ahead of the start of term. The school recently celebrated another wonderful set of GCSE results and parents of Year 11 pupils had the chance to take a behind the scenes tour of the building prior to the official opening.
