Cundall Manor wrap up 3rd National Title in 3 Years

Cundall Manor is celebrating another national title after our U11 Girls hockey team claimed the ISA National Hockey Championships at the former Olympic Hockey Stadium in London. The U11 team clinched the trophy at the Lee Valley Stadium following a tough 1-0 win over Essex based, Littlegarth School. The win makes it THREE titles in three years at the prestigious tournament, with the U13 team previously claiming the top prize. The team had to overcome tough opposition to reach the knock out stages, with a 0-0 draw against Alleyn Court Preparatory School in the opening fixture proving the difficulty of the draw. The team played some superb hockey, keeping a clean sheet in the remaining group fixtures against Oakfield Preparatory School and Malvern St James before gaining qualification to the finals. In the finals stage, the team overcame Holme Grange School, Copthill School and St Margaret’s School, only conceding the one goal throughout the tournament. The final was a nervous affair following an early Cundall goal in the third minute but the North Yorkshire side held on to the lead despite attacking hockey from the Essex team. Mrs Louise Bessey, Head of Girls Games at Cundall Manor School said: “It is an amazing achievement for the girls and for our school. To claim three national titles in as many years shows the strength in depth at the school and to compete so well on the national stage, is testament to their hard work and dedication.” The school’s U13 team were also in action at the former Olympic stadium, trying to emulate the success of the previous two U13 teams. The team secured a bronze medal finish after beating Lingfield College in the playoff final. Cheshire school, Alderley Edge School for Girls claimed the top prize following a 2-1 victory over Holme Grange School from Wokingham near Reading. On hand to help with the trophies was Team GB and Scotland International, Chris Grassick. Mrs Bessey added: “Events like these are always a great way to test our teams against some of the best sides in the country. To come away with a first and third is amazing. The girls should be very proud of their achievements and the way they competed today.”

Switch Off Fortnight

Pupils are encouraging their friends, teachers and parents to be more aware of how they use electricity as part of ‘Switch Off Fortnight;’ a campaign to reduce energy consumption organised by The Pod. Madame Cooke has been leading the eco-warrior enrichment group by encouraging pupils to learn why it’s important to try to save energy. As part of the event, pupils go undercover and complete a school audit to find out where energy is being wasted. The nationwide event has over 1700 schools and colleges taking part. Last year, eco-warriors saw a median energy saving of around 10% from the event. At the end of the campaign, pupils will complete a second school audit to find out how behaviour has changed. Pupils will then share the results with their friends and teachers in an attempt to encourage everyone to keep up the good work all year round.
Green Pupils Achieve Silver Standard

Well done to our pupils and staff after receiving a silver award from the Woodland Trust. The school has been participating in the Woodland Trust Green Tree School Award, an educational initiative, designed to encourage outdoor learning and help teachers inspire their pupils about woods, trees and wildlife. There are currently 7,000 schools registered on the charities award scheme. Schools gain points by completing environmental activities and progressing through stages until reaching the platinum title. Director of Outdoor Activities at Cundall Manor School, Stuart Jackson, said: “Since we launched the Wild Wood we have had an amazing response to our outdoor and environmental activities.” “The Woodland Trust activities are a superb way to identify ways in which we can engage with our native woodland areas.” “At Cundall we greatly appreciate outdoor learning and we encourage our pupils to get their hands dirty, be creative and have lots of fun.” “We hope that activities like this will really instil a passion for the environment for the rest of their lives.”

Thank You from the Cundall Ball Committee

We are all taught from an early age that saying thank you is important, and following a significant donation from the Cundall Ball Committee, pupils, staff and the Cundall Ball committee are all joining together to say a huge thank you to everyone who supported The Cundall Manor Summer Ball 2018. A significant donation with money raised from this year’s Cundall Ball has been used to help finance IT development across the curriculum with new interactive whiteboards and chromebooks being added to the growing IT infrastructure. The Cundall Ball committee members were on hand earlier this week to see the impact new IT equipment is having on the learning experiences at the local school. Chair of the Cundall Ball committee, Rachel Powell said: “We would all like to say a huge thank you to everyone who supported the Cundall Ball last year.” “It is a great team effort and huge recognition must go to the generosity of our wonderful sponsors who donate the most fantastic prizes year after year along with the kindness of our parents and guests who come along and support the evening.” “The money you all raised will have a direct impact on the learning experiences of all the pupils at Cundall Manor and it is great to see them already reaping the rewards.” “ICT skills will only play a larger part in the development of the economies of the future and to witness the development of the school’s use of new technologies is a great benefit to all.” The ongoing development of the school’s IT infrastructure comes hot-on-the-heels of a further investment to secure super-fast broadband for the rural school. Pupils Undergo CPR Training as Part of Restart a Heart Day

Pupils Undergo CPR Training as Part of Restart a Heart Day Pupils from across the school are today learning the importance of CPR as part of a Europe wide initiative. Cundall joined another 115 schools from across the county to take part in ‘Restart a Heart Day’ – a programme which provides pupils with life-saving cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training. Pupils as young as five joined in the training which aims to teach members of the public how to help restart the heart of someone who has suffered a cardiac arrest. Instructors from The Yorkshire Ambulance Service taught nearly 340 children at the school how to perform CPR using an interactive DVD and practical instruction on inflatable manikins. Stuart Jackson, helped organise the event for the school. He said: “Events like this help raise awareness and equip our pupils with a real-life skill that could prevent someone dying.” The school benefited from the expertise of several staff from the Yorkshire Ambulance Service being on hand to help instruct pupils as to the best way to perform the life-saving skill. Across Europe around 350,000 people a year suffer a cardiac arrest outside of a medical environment, often in the home. Bystander CPR by non-medical persons increases survival by two to three times, however, today it is delivered in only one in five out-of-hospital Cardiac Arrest cases. Estimates suggest that by increasing this rate we may save 100,000 lives in Europe per year. CPR consists of 4 key steps: Call for help Check for signs of life Perform mouth-to-mouth Perform chest compressions To find out more about Restart a Heart Day visit the Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust dedicated website onwww.restartaheart.yas.nhs.uk/day/The Resuscitation Council (UK) have produced an app to help people on the go learn CPR. You can download it from your app store.
Ceramics Masterclass

Ceramics Masterclass Cundall welcomed a leading artist to hold a uniquely rural masterclass in ceramic art. We were delighted to welcome ceramic artist Jill Ford to the school to showcase a ceramics masterclass based on Highland cattle. Head of Art, Sarah Pearson, said: “It was wonderful to welcome Jill to Cundall. Our older pupils have previously visited her workshop and seen her in action, so it was a wonderful opportunity for the rest of our pupils to benefit from Jill’s expertise.” East Yorkshire based Jill, recently had her artwork on display at the Hepworth and has featured in a number of high profile ceramic exhibitions throughout the country. Sarah added: “We have a lot of rural families at our school and the children loved attempting to replicate the Highland cattle’s famous coat in clay.” “Thank you to Jill for coming into school and for hosting such a wonderful day of activities for our pupils.” The artwork will now be fired in the school’s kiln before the finishing touches are added.
