U13 and U11 Hockey Tour to Edinburgh
Accompanied by the indefatigable Mrs Walkland and hockey coach Jo, the U11 and U13 hockey girls enjoyed a wonderful tour to Edinburgh over the exeat weekend. The two teams played Belhaven Hill School on the Saturday afternoon with wins of 6-0 and 5-1. On the Sunday at Loretto School both teams played well in the group matches and qualified for the semi-finals. They then won the semis and went through to the finals. The U11s played Fettes School (in front of a large group of supporting parents) and lost a hard fought match by 2-0. The U13s played St Mary’s School, a team that had beaten them in the group stages. At half time Cundall were losing 1-0 but showed far greater determination and aggression in the second half, scoring within two minutes of full time, followed by a second and final superb goal over the goalkeeper’s head by Connie Gill. The U13s were the tournament winners. Mrs Walkland complemented the girls on their conduct throughout the weekend “All the girls were extremely well behaved and polite, they were an absolute pleasure to take.”
Sport Report
The last week has been another successful week of sport here at Cundall. On Monday the Upper School boys had a very close encounter against Yarm at Under 15s when the lead changed several times, with our team only conceding defeat in the final minute 41-48. On Tuesday, also against Yarm, the Under 12A team gained revenge with a 15-7 win and the Under 16 girls hockey team also recorded a 5-0 victory. On Wednesday there was a block fixture against St Mary’s Hall with the girls recording some excellent results. In Hockey the Under 13s won 3-2, the Under 12s won 7-1, whilst in netball there were improved performances at Under 11 and Under 10 (with scores of 3-11 and 0-0 respectively). The boys were equally successful with the Under 13A team winning 46-0 and the Under 13B team winning 50-0. The Under 11A team continue to have close encounters with a 28-33 loss whilst the Under 11B team recorded a 40-0 victory. Against Silcoates School in hockey the Under 11 girls won 5-0 and the Under 10s also won, by 5-3. On Thursday the Under 15 girls continued their successes in hockey with a 5-3 victory over Scarborough College. The Under 15 boys were involved in another high scoring match in their 31-54 loss also to Scarborough College. Finally on Friday Cundall hosted visitors from King’s Hawford, Worcester in an afternoon of excellent and well matched sport. The Under 11A team lost narrowly by 5-12 whilst the Under 11B team drew 24-24. For the girls the Under 11A team drew 2-2 and the Under 11B team won 1-0. Well done to everyone involved this week!
A Ground Breaking Moment for Cundall’s Astroturf
Last week saw the start of work on our brand new Astroturf pitch, with a mini ‘ground breaking ceremony’. Accompanied by hockey players from Main and Upper School, Mrs Walkland dug out the very first patch of grass before handing over to the heavy diggers to clear the entire area. We look forward to bringing you updates of the work over the next few months.
Sport report
Whilst the girls have probably lead the way in terms of impressive performances and successes so far this term the boys had their turn this week. Against Clock House in Bradford, the Under 11A team had a close match in winning 12 – 10, the Under 11B team impressed with a 6 – 1 victory and the Under 9s whilst showing signs of being a good team went down by 4 tries to 7. For the Upper School boys there was success in football against Huddersfield Grammar School with a 7 – 4 win, with Ed Lake on impressive form, scoring all seven goals. The Under 16 boys faired differently however with a heavy defeat to Hill House. On Saturday, the Under 13B team travelled to Scarborough College to play the host’s A team and fought valiantly despite losing 0 – 33. The performance of the week was with the Under 13A team that hosted Oakham School, a school with a very big rugby reputation and history, and recorded a 19 – 17 victory in a very well fought and physical match. For the girls there was continued success this week. In hockey against Terrington Hall, the Under 13s recorded a convincing 6 – 1 win and the Under 11s showed their strength in a 5 – 0 victory, whilst the Under 9s lost 0 – 6 in netball. The Under 11B team travelled to play Hill House’s A team and battled well despite losing 3 – 5. On Thursday, the Upper School girls travelled to Huddersfield Grammar School for the first time in the school’s history and came up against strong opposition in netball with the Under 16s losing 11 – 29 and the Under 14s losing by a single point 14 – 15. Finally the Under 9 and Under 10 girls attended netball festivals at Gateways and, whilst there were no overall winners with the festival being an opportunity for match experience, our girls won some of their matches in both age groups. Mrs Walkland would like to pass on a huge congratulations to Helena Youmans who, after a tremendous amount of hard work and dedication, has been selected for Tier 1 of the Hockey Regional Performance Centre. This is a centre taking the best girls from the North of England where they are given more coaching for 6 weeks from England coaches and further selection for Tier 2 of the regional performance centre.
Sports Report
The term continues to be busy with both weekday and weekend. The girls continued their hockey success from the previous week with the Under 11s beating St Martin’s 4-3 whilst against Silcoates School the Under 13s won 5-0 and the Under 12s won 7-0. The Under 11s also sent a team to Scarborough College and narrowly lost 2-3. On Saturday the Under 13s hosted touring side The Downs School from Bristol and had an excellent match. Whilst leading 3-1 at half time, they were eventually narrowly beaten by 3-5 in what proved to be a superb game. There was also continued success for the boys in rugby with the Under 13s recording a resounding victory over Barnard Castle by 63-5. The Upper School also got their season off to a winning start at Under 14s with a 36-17 victory over a St Peters XV. At Richmond House the Under 11s battled valiantly in a 12-21 loss, whilst the Under 10s (having to play the new continuum laws for the first time) lost by 6 tries to 9. The Under 12s had a special treat this week when they competed in a triangular fixture with Barnard Castle and Yarm, as a curtain raiser for the Barnard Castle and Yarm senior game, at the very impressive 25,000 seater stadium that is the home of Mowden Park RFC in Darlington. The first game against Barnard Castle was a hard fought affair with the hosts running out 1 – 3 winners, whilst the match against Yarm finished 0-1. Finally, on Sunday, the Under 13s competed in the Durham School Parling Trophy tournament where they found themselves in a tough group. Despite losing their first two games narrowly, they finished strongly by winning the final pool game against The Downs School, Bristol.

Cundall Manor have had a fantastic start to the sporting season with the girls showing the way with some emphatic victories in Hockey. Against St Martin’s Ampleforth the Under 12s won 7-0, as did the Under 13s by the same scoreline. Against Giggleswick, the Under 14s recorded a 3-1 victory and the result of the day was the Under 16s’ 8-0 victory in which some very sskillfulhockey was displayed. For the boys in Rugby the Under 11 and Under 13 teams travelled to St Martin’s Ampleforth for a warm-up practice tournament. The Under 11s equipped themselves well in beating St Martin’s Ampleforth by 3 tries to nil and then narrowly losing to Aysgarth by 2 tries to nil in a close contest. The Under 13s impressed by beating Aysgarth by 4 tries to 1 and then followed that up with a victory against the hosts by 3 tries to nil at half time, when the game had to be postponed due to a suspected serious injury to a St Martin’s player. This all bodes well for the term ahead. Mr Liley and the games department would like to thank all parents, in advance, for their support of the girls and boys at fixtures. Cundall Manor is very proud of its excellent reputation as supporters; we continue to forever encourage our own players and to applaud the good play of both teams.
Jake’s Ski Success
Following our recent update of Jake Doyle’s wonderful alpine season, we’re delighted to confirm that Jake has now been selected for the the Snowsport England U14 Alpine Development squad for the 2014/15 season!! Jake had to undergo rigorous fitness testing at Reading University this term; the coaches have just confirmed that his performance there has qualified him for a place on the squad. Jake can now look forward to representing Team GB and competing in some international races next year. Well done Jake!
Harry joinsthe LAMBS
Congratulations to Harry Hill for being selected for the England LAMBS (The Independent Schools Rugby Football Club) Under 13 squad. He will be taking part in a tour in Dublin 4th – 8th April. Good luck Harry!
Jake’s Ski Update
We’re delighted to be able to bring you news of Jake Doyle’s progress on the Alpine pistes. It’s been a tougher season for Jake this year as he is in the u14 category and some of these boys are big lads! His most notable recent results include: British Schoolboys in Meiringen, Switzerland Silver in Giant Slalom and Slalom, Aiglon Cup, Villars, Switzerland Gold in Slalom Bronze in Giant Slalom This is wonderful news for Jake, especially his performance in the Aiglon Cup, this being his future school! Congratulations Jake! We look forward to hearing all Jake’s news when he returns to Cundall after Easter.
George’s Tetrathlon selection
Congratulations to George Rigal who has been selected to represent the North of England in a Pony Club Junior Tetrathlon against Scotland, Wales and Ireland being held at Windsor Horse Show on May 17th and 18th. The competitors will be presented to the Queen in the Main Arena for Prize Giving, which is very exciting!
