At Cundall Manor, outdoor pursuits are more than just activities—they are an essential part of our pupils’ personal development. From the earliest years, children are encouraged to step outside their comfort zones, explore new challenges, and grow in confidence, resilience, and self-awareness.
Our approach nurtures a deep understanding of what pupils are capable of achieving. It’s an education that builds character, fosters leadership, and inspires ambition—laying the foundation for future success, both at university and beyond.
From as early as Pre-Prep, pupils are immersed in adventurous experiences tailored to their age and stage. Whether it’s spending a night in their classroom to progress to the next year a night on the school grounds in tents, and taking part in Year 3 upwards residential courses with the Outward Bound Trust, progressing in Senior School to climbing Ben Nevis, rough camping in the Lake District, learning to sail in Cowes, or competing on an international sports tour, every experience is designed to ignite curiosity and a sense of possibility.
There is something uniquely powerful about the outdoors in helping young people discover who they are. Away from the classroom, personalities shine. Pupils gain insight into their strengths, face their fears, and often surprise themselves with what they can achieve. It is in these moments that confidence grows—and greatness begins to take shape.
Through our outdoor pursuits programme, pupils also develop a deep appreciation for the environment. By engaging with the natural world, they learn to respect and value it—lessons that stay with them for life. Whether hiking through the Yorkshire Moors or pitching a tent under the stars, they are encouraged to observe, reflect, and protect the landscapes they explore.
Learning outside the classroom provides a fresh perspective. In the natural environment, routines and pressures fall away, and pupils are free to engage with challenges in new and creative ways. Many return to school revitalised, with a renewed enthusiasm for learning and a greater belief in their own potential.
