Science sparks fun for Form 2
A recent trip to the Life Centre in Newcastle sparked excitement across Form 2 as they enjoyed a day of all things science. Form 2’s very own correspondent, Nancy, tells us about her experience on a day of exploration. When we first arrived we went into The Curiosity Zone, this was all about interacting with science and doing mini experiments. Then we went into the Science Theatre where we watched a food workshop where we dropped a jelly baby into some heated chemicals and it gave off a lot of smoke and noise. Matilda also ate a mealworm! We did a workshop on electrical circuits where we made several circuits ourselves, then we learnt about conductors and insulators through a series of experiments. We even made a circuit using us as wires! Afterwards we had lunch and the lights changed colour! Then we went into The Brain Zone where we did lots of fun interactive things to help us understand our brains better. I learnt some interesting facts and enjoyed the optical illusions. Later on we watched a show in the planetarium which was all about why and how we measure different units of time the way we do. We went on an incredible 4D motion ride about monsters, we even got sprayed with water! Later we went to the gift shop and we all brought things for us and our families. We even saw the Angel of the North on the way there and back.
Flying the Flag at the Riverside
Lucky pupils from Cundall Manor School had the honour of taking part in the Flag Parade at Middlesbrough FC’s Riverside Stadium on Saturday. The youngsters took part in the match day procession ahead of the important home game against Ipswich Town FC. SandrineCooke coordinated the event for the school. She said: “The pupils had a great time and thoroughly enjoyed the day.” “We would like to say a huge thanks to Middlesbrough FC for all their help and hospitality.” The lucky pupils even met with Boro left-back, George Friend. The result left Middlesbrough FC joint top of the championship following a tense 0-0 draw.
Flashmob Lights up Monday Morning
A flashmob sparked up inspiration for Cundall Manor School pupils ahead of a writing challenge. Teachers from Forms 1 – 4 broke out in an impromptu dance involving bikes, chessboards, juggling and lacrosse sticks outside the main school building much to the enjoyment of their pupils. Head of Forms 1-4, Stuart Bayne said: “we wanted to do something a little bit different that hopefully the children would remember and be inspired to write about. The fun element played a huge part in making this memorable for them.” Pupils will be expected to write a piece on the flashmob for their English writing challenge later this week.
Rocket Science Plants Seeds for Tomorrow’s Astronauts.
It’s rocket science but not as we know it as pupils from Cundall Manor School take part in the RHS Rocket Seed experiment championed by astronaut Tim Peake. The experiment will be part of a national campaign by the RHS to encourage school children to get in to gardening. Lucky pupils from Form 1 will be testing the effects of space flight on a batch of seeds and monitoring their growth against a control batch. Form 1 teacher, Adelle Rogerson, is helping co-ordinate the experiment at Cundall Manor. She said: “It’s a great opportunity for our pupils to get out into the greenhouse and take part in something fun.” “Tim Peake’s involvement has excited the children, not many people can say they have been involved in a space experiment.” The experiment will last for six weeks and is designed as part of wider research, to weigh up whether it is possible to grow our own food on other planets, millions of miles away from Earth. As part of the experiment the school will be updating their social media streams with how the rocket science is progressing. York Trip Proves Fun for Form Four
Form 4 recently paid a visit to York as part of their studies. The City is steeped in history and our workshops at the Minster and The Yorkshire Museum, took the children from Roman times to modern day York. We had expert guides taking us on a tour of the Minster, teaching us about its troubled past, the various phases of development and what they are doing to conserve this magnificent building. At the Yorkshire Museum, our workshop brought the conflicts over York to life and we had a chance to dress up as various settlers/conquerers from throughout the ages. Following a busy day, we enjoyed a terrific tea at Pizza Hut before heading back out to the Minster to join our guide for the Ghost Walk. Whilst some of the tales were a little scary, we learnt a lot about aspects of Yorks’ history that perhaps are not top of the list for covering in the curriculum. It truly is a fantastic City. All of the children were brilliantly behaved and represented the school well. It was a truly enriching day for all.
Double Tournament Success for Cundall Manor Girls
Some of our U13 team today at school It’s twice as nice for Cundall Manor School as two of the Girls’ Hockey Teams brought back tournament silverware last week, following two impressive tournament wins. The U13’s Girls’ Hockey side triumphed against tough opposition at the Durham School Invitational Tournament after securing victory without conceding a goal. Louise Bessey, Head of Girls’ Games Said: “The girls have been outstanding this season. They have come so far and have really enjoyed the time playing together, proudly representing Cundall Manor School.” Captain C. Gill was dominant on and off the field leading her team to an impressive victory. This victory will set them up for the final tournament of the season, The North Final, to be played later this week (Tues 15 March) at Leeds University, where a place in the national finals is at stake. Elsewhere, the U11 Girls’ Hockey team were victorious at the St Martin’s Invitational Tournament and continued their astonishing unbeaten run. The team have yet to be beaten this season and are due to join the U13’s at the North Final, Leeds later this week. Mrs Bessey said: “I am incredibly proud of our Under 11’s and their outstanding run of form. Smashed Project Alcohol Awareness visit
Alcohol Awareness Recently Form 5s were treated to a special presentation from Alcohol Awareness group Smashed Project. Smashed Project is dedicated to breaking the culture of underage drinking worldwide. They use drama and creativity to equip young people with the information, awareness, and confidence to make responsible choices around alcohol. Cundall students watched a play by three young people depicting how easy it is to be affected by underage drinking and how significant that affect can be. After the play, the students were asked to think about each character and how could they have acted differently in the situation. Inspiration from local artist
Local Artist inspires with felt-making Year 6 pupils were recently treated to a fun felt-making workshop. The Yorkshire based “fibre artist” Emma Fountain came to teach her craft of needle felting and how to make fabulous creatures from wool fibres. Emma started by showing the pupils the techniques required to create the various components of a sculpture and discussed the qualities of the materials and of course the Health and Safety considerations of working with a sharp, barbed needle! The pupils were then free to create their own versions of an Owl, which was great fun. At the end of the day we had an array of colourful birds, some with their own accessories. Stone Age discoveries
History comes alive for Form 1 Form 1 thoroughly enjoyed their history morning learning about life during the Stone Age period. They had the opportunity to explore many artefacts, including deer antlers, pottery, tools and the full skin of a wild boar! The children also took part in some ‘cave art’ using charcoal, these were very impressive and are on display in the Form 1 classrooms. A fun, busy and educational morning was had by all. Cross Country Champions
Cross-country runners recently competed at the St Martin’s Ampleforth Invitation Cross Country. The Under 9 boys romped home as team winners, as did the Under 11 girls and the Under 13 boys.
