Woolly hats raised £267 for homeless charity
Woolly Hat/Wig Day for the Homeless This week Key Stage 2 supported St Mungo’s charity for the Homeless by wearing Woolly hats or wigs. St Mungo’s works to provide a bed and support to more than 2,500 people a night who are either homeless or at risk. Students raised an impressive £267! Well done everyone!
Magna Science Adventures
Magnificent Adventures at Magna Form 1 had an action packed, fun day at Magna Science Adventure Centre. The enormous venue has four pavilions, one for each of the elements; fire, water, air and Earth. Each pavilion is full of many games, activities, facts and demonstrations specific to the element. It wasn’t a surprise that the children enjoyed the water element the most, where they got the opportunity to get wet and play with water. The children also took part in a ‘Rockets and Balloons’ workshop which supported their recent Science topic very well. Hot air balloons were created out of different sized plastic bags, testing out which worked the best against the gravitational force. They then witnessed a rocket blasting along a thin wire using air, water and then finally fire, this was very exciting! The children had hands-on experience creating their own mini rockets using a chemical reaction of vinegar and bicarbonate of soda, so simple but such fun! A fantastic day was had by all.
Children in Need
A huge thank you to everyone who remembered to bring in their donations and got dressed up for Children in Need on Friday. We saw some fabulous ‘Hero’ costumes around school, including sports personalities, policemen, firemen, armed forces members and plenty of comic book super heroes. Special mention must go to Form 3’s Oscar Fenby who emulated his cycling hero Chris Hoy by spending the day sweating it out in bubble wrap! Oscar’s inspired costume drew the attention of Sir Chris himself who retweeted the Fenby’s Tweet on the day! Thank you also to all the children in Reception who boosted the Children in Need coffers with their bun sale on Friday. The total raised by the whole school currently stands at a wonderful £456!
Karate Grading
There were lots of nerves and excitement last Saturday as four members of the Karate Club were graded for their Red Belt. Sensei Court 7th Dan was the external examiner overseeing the grading although the grading itself was conducted by our own Leckby pupil and Sensei 2nd Dan Isabella Mallon-McCarty. Isabella, an experienced Black Belt and qualified teacher/instructor, was responsible for training the boys being assessed and in charge of their actual grading. Isabella is offering her expertise and skills to the Karate Club as part of the Volunteer section of her Duke of Edinburgh Award; she said she was delighted with their attitude and the standard they achieved. Congratulations therefore to Hugo Hynd, Thomas Stringer, Henry Scagell and Alex Twibill who all performed extremely well and passed their Red Belt grading with flying colours. Mr McCarty was very pleased with the grading day and would like to thank Sensei Hunzinger Black Belt 1st Dan for his help, support and expertise.
Cub Pack News
The Cundall Manor Cub Pack were proud to participate in the Remembrance Day Parade at Easingwold last Sunday. Thank you to all the cubs who came along to represent the school.
Pumpkin Competition

Form 3 Egyptian Morning
Form 3 enjoyed a morning learning even more about the Ancient Egyptians. They started the day looking at the geography of Egypt and then investigating the Ancient Egyptian timeline. They then had to become historians and use their detective skills to decide what various artefacts were used for. After break they had the gruesome job of preparing a body for mummification. The morning was completed by taking part in some original Egyptian board games and the children all enjoyed playing mehen. A lot was learned throughout the morning.
Scarecrow Festival
Congratulations to everyone who came and joined in our inaugural scarecrow festival just before half term. The fabulous fruits of their labours added an extra dimension to life around the school grounds (there were several double takes to check whether these unfamiliar characters on the premises were in fact real!) in the run up to the half term break.
Latin scholars excel again
In February, four of our Latin pupils were recorded by Matthew Ford to enter a national Latin reading competition, organised by ARLT (Association for the Reform of Latin Teaching) for schools in this country. This the first time our school has entered this prestigious competition. Edward Kettleborough in the intermediate section, had to read a difficult 20 lines of Latin verse from Virgil Book 12 in the correct metre. The junior section was ably represented by Monty Powell, Felix Fawcett and Luke Mountford. Their task was to read a very emotional section from stage 17 of the Cambridge Latin Course involving the death of a slave boy defending a Roman citizen. All entries were judged on accuracy of pronunciation and the ability to convey the meaning and mood of the passage. Results have just been published. Luke achieved a “Highly Commended” certificate. This is especially praiseworthy as Luke was a late starter to Latin, so optime fecisti! Magistra Latina, Miss Kuit, is very proud of all of them and hopes our pupils will continue to enter in future years.
George’s Tetrathlon selection
Congratulations to George Rigal who has been selected to represent the North of England in a Pony Club Junior Tetrathlon against Scotland, Wales and Ireland being held at Windsor Horse Show on May 17th and 18th. The competitors will be presented to the Queen in the Main Arena for Prize Giving, which is very exciting!
