Form 6’s Literature Quiz

Last week a group from Form 6 took part in the Yorkshire heats of the International Kids’ Literature Quiz hosted by King James’ School in Knaresborough. Congratulations to Sarah Sullivan, Annabel Hartley, Ben Earley and Henry Calvert for coming seventh out of a field of over thirty schools. Not considering themselves a sporty bunch, the Cundall team were shocked to win the round on Sport in Literature for which they were awarded a bundle of books.

Well done Bev!

Hot on the heels of her recent accolade at the Hambleton Sports Awards, we are delighted to announce that Hockey Coach and Matron Bev Longthorne has now been selected as an Unsung Hero finalist in the Northern Echo’s Local Heroes Award for 2014. Bev will be attending the Awards Gala Dinner early next month and  we look forward to reporting on the evening before the end of term. This is a wonderful accolade for Bev and testament to the enormous contribution she makes to the local sporting community. Congratulations from everyone at Cundall, Bev!

U16 North East England Hockey tournament.

U16 North East England Hockey tournament. Cundall as U16 county hockey champions went to Leeds University for the North East round. The girls played extremely well in the group stage and beat Grammar school at Leeds 2- 0 and Teesside High 5-2. In the semi finals against Hymers, Cundall were the stronger team in the first half and had a number of opportunities. At half time it was 0 – 0 but Hymers came out with renewed vigour in the second half and scored 2 goals, one of which came from a suspect penalty corner. The girls should be very proud of themselves and be aware of how much they have achieved in becoming county champions and reaching this stage.

Sports report

This last week was a slightly quieter affair for Cundall’s sporting pupils. It was girls’ games that dominated the Wednesday afternoon fixture list: against Yarm the Under 13 hockey team won 5-0 and the Under 12s drew 2-2. At Scarborough College the Under 11 hockey team demonstrated their strength by winning comfortably 9-0 and the Under 9s found matters tougher losing 1-3. In Rugby, the boys Under 13s travelled north to Red House and, following a faultless performance, they returned victorious with a staggering 76-0 win. On Thursday the Upper School boys played a third game against Ackworth School and, having drawn the previous two games, this too was a close encounter. With honours even with 5 minutes to go, a goalmouth scramble resulted in Cundall conceding to eventually lose 2-3. On Friday the Under 8 boys were once again displaying their skills at tag rugby when they entertained Gateways School and recorded two victories to finish off another successful Cundall sporting week. Apologies for the omission in last week’s sporting news: congratulations to the  the U13 girl’s hockey team whose performance at the mini tournament at Queen Margaret’s saw them successfully qualify for the County stages, having scored 21 unanswered goals in the process.. Well done girls

PP2’s volcanoes

PP2 had a fantastic Literacy lesson where they had to read carefully and follow instructions to create an erupting volcano. Working in teams the children did a brilliant job making their volcanoes and then mixing baking soda, washing up liquid, vinegar and food colouring to make lava. They then poured vinegar in and stood back to watch the eruption. There was some spectacular lava and the children were excited to see that their hard work paid off. Parents, watch out as the children might be looking in your kitchen cupboards so they can try making erupting volcanoes at home!

Form 3 Egyptian Morning

Form 3 took part in the second of their Egyptian mornings, this time run by Catherine Conyard from Historical Interpretations. Children got the chance to handle artefacts and had to try and work out what they were – the most difficult ones are pictured in the photograph.  The long wooden artefact is in fact a drill and the dark wooden artefact on the bench is a wooden pillow! Children also played Egyptian games and mummified a body in preparation for its journey to the afterlife. It was a great morning and children learnt lots of new facts about the period.

PP1 learn about carnivorous plants!

On Monday 10th November, Pre-Prep were treated to a talk about Carnivorous Plants. We learned about how these plants catch their food and even about plants that live on the Yorkshire Moors! We also discovered that the one of the plants could grow as tall as a full grown man. Finally we were lucky to see a Venus Fly Trap in action with a live demonstration.

Form 4 visit to the Crucial Crew

On Thursday 13th November the whole of Form 4 enjoyed a visit to Crucial Crew at RAF Leeming. Taking part in Crucial Crew involved the children being taught about everyday dangers around them and how to keep safe.  Various organisations such as the Police, Fire Brigade, Npower and Taylor Wimpey construction presented a variety of scenarios to emphasise dangers which we may come across in life. The children learned what to do in the event of an emergency and had lots of practice in dealing with scenarios that put them in danger. These scenarios included ringing the Emergency Services and performing first aid. The morning proved to be a great learning experience for Form 4 and produced lots of areas for discussion on return to school.

Children in Need

The whole of school was packed full of superheroes on Friday to raise money for Children in Need, nowhere more so than in Pre-Prep.  Our youngest pupils particularly enjoyed Mrs Feeley’s Super TA  costume – complete with tinsel clad pants and rubber gloves – as she prepared to “tackle anything on the mean streets of Cundall!”. We also held a competition to design a funky pair of superhero pants. There were some fantastic designs including plenty of sparkle and style. The winner of the competition was Alexander Reid with his ‘mince pie boy’ creation. The Pre-Prep children enjoyed a Children in Need assembly where they learnt about where the money they raised would go and PP2 counted the money to give a grand total of  £141 to add to the superb total already raised by Form 6 (see below). Again, we would like to congratulate the Form 6 pupils for their excellent concert in aid of Children in Need. Led by fundraising veteran Henry Calvert, the Form 6 pupils treated their evening audience of family and friends to a delightful programme of song, dance, drama and poetry. Many parents had very generously contributed to the wonderful hampers that were raffled on the night. Thank you to everyone who supported our various Children in Need activities this year; we are delighted to announce that the total banked now stands at £1368.74.

GCSE Art trip to Paris

Last weekend Mrs Pearson and Mr Vale accompanied the Eldmire Art group to Paris for their GCSE Art trip.  The trip proved to be both busy and inspiring. Amongst the many attractions that we saw was the Musée du Louvre.  The evening atmosphere of Paris was wonderful and the pupils were excited to see the Mona Lisa.  The following day we went to the Musée de l’Art Moderne and then on to the Pompidou Centre where the group’s eyes were opened to some of the more challenging conceptual art.   A trip down the river provided us with an excellent opportunity to see the sights and learn more about the history of Paris, including the Revolution and the bridges over the Seine.  For many, the highlight of the trip was seeing the collection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist masterpieces found in the Musée D’Orsay.  A wander through the Tuileries Gardens back to the airport was also a perfect ending to a memorable trip.
