Songwriting Workshop Inspires Upper School

A workshop from a talented up-and-coming songwriter recently inspired dozens of our Upper School pupils. Rich Cottell, came to Cundall earlier this term to conduct a series of songwriting workshops with some of the school’s older pupils. The 24 year-old from Devon, who recently released his debut album, ‘More than just a Geek,’ has a cult following online and has a string of writing credits to his name for some of Britain’s biggest selling pop artists. Describing his sound as ‘feel good, live life pop,’ Rich visited the school and encouraged pupils to get some of their thoughts down on paper. Rich said: “My goal was to show young people how, when they put their mind to it, anyone, musician or not, can write and be involved with the writing of a song.” “The day was a huge success, with all students creating minimum of a verse and chorus in small groups and performing them.” Adding: “My hope is that it will inspire some of the students to be even more creative and explore songwriting as a career.”

Lunchtime Concert

Another wonderful set of performances wowed proud parents and fellow pupils following the first of this year’s Lunchtime Concert series which returned to Cundall Church earlier today. We heard from pianists, singers, flautists, guitarists and many more of our young musicians. Well done to all our performers for another enchanting concert and keep up the great work.

ABRSM Music Success

It is twice as nice for 9 year old twins William and Kaitlin, who are celebrating a wonderful set of results in their recent Music Exams. The twins recorded a significant musical achievement by both claiming distinctions in their respective exams. William, who sat his Grade 3 in Piano and Kaitlin, who was examined on her Grade 2 Singing, both achieved the accolade earlier this year. The twins join other pupils who are also celebrating their resounding successes following fantastic feedback on their Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) examinations. The musicians secured a 100% pass rate across a variety of specialisms and grades. The ABRSM results mark the culmination of many months’ work for the school’s pupils. Director of Music at Cundall Manor School, Sarah Reece, said: “The hard work and practice put in by our musicians is wonderful. To see such success across our school is a great achievement.” She added: “A special well done deserves to go to William and Kaitlin for their superb results and to both gain a distinction is a wonderful success.” Pupils from the school will be next performing at the nearby Ampleforth College as part of a wider choral day at the Abbey.

The Wild Wood Launched

An exciting new outdoor learning environment has been launched at Cundall Manor School. The Wild Wood has already seen pupils as young as two visiting the new woodland trail which has been devised to add a new facet to the school’s fun and robust curriculum. Pupils from across the school will benefit from a new environment to engage their curiosity while embedding English, maths and other curriculum subjects along the way. Engaging with a fun and practical learning environment, pupils will get hands on practice developing their skills and understanding of the natural world and how to keep a sustainable and managed woodland. The school plans to install forest art along the routes while also encouraging pupils to use the nearby Kitchen Garden and Tipis to get a thorough knowledge of the local habit and facilities available to them. The Wild Wood will also allow the pupils of the school’s Eco-Committee a chance to monitor the wide range of ecological diversity across the school’s 28 acres of North Yorkshire countryside. Head of Key Stage 2 at Cundall Manor School, Mr Bayne, said: “The Wild Wood will be a wonderful addition to the school’s curriculum.” “The fact that we already have so many outdoor activities which our children enjoy, we are sure that the wood will prove incredibly popular, particularly with our younger pupils.” The school, which recently received national recognition for its extra-curricular offer after being shortlisted for the ISA Awards, will be hosting an Open Morning on Saturday 14 October starting at 10am.
