Cash for Kids Launch

A huge thank you to our friends from the wonderful TFM Cash For Kids Mission Christmas Campaign who came into school to launch this year’s Christmas Appeal. Last year was a huge success and we hope that we can surpass the fantastic effort made by our generous community last Christmas. Each form will be allocated a box to decorate and fill with donations of toys (new, unwrapped, any age group, any size and value) and a prize will be given to the form who delivers the best box. Bobbie Chapman said: “Every year we receive an astonishing amount of applications for gifts and this year we are hoping to help 48,000 local children across the North East.” “The support we receive every year is overwhelming and we couldn’t complete our mission without schools like Cundall Manor helping. For the last three years, the students and teachers have supported Cash for Kids by generously donating gifts. These gifts will go to local children and young adults who aren’t as fortunate. Not only does this make the children we help believe in the magic of Christmas, it also lets them know that someone cares.” Adding: “Thank you for supporting Cash for Kids Mission Christmas again, we couldn’t do it without you.”
Restart a Heart Day 2019

Pupils are today learning the importance of CPR as part of a worldwide initiative. Cundall Manor School joined hundreds of schools from across the country to take part in ‘Restart a Heart Day’ – a programme which provides pupils with life-saving cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training. Pupils as young as NINE joined in the training which aims to teach members of the public how to help restart the heart of someone who has suffered a cardiac arrest. Instructors from The Yorkshire Ambulance Service taught over 250 children at the school how to perform CPR using an interactive DVD and practical instruction on inflatable manikins. School nurse, Vicky Lee, organised the event for the school. She said: “Events like this help raise awareness and equip our pupils with a real-life skill that could prevent someone dying.” Adding: “We are really proud to be taking part in the sixth annual Restart A Heart Campaign and second annual World Restart A Heart Campaign today.” “A huge thank you to the volunteer instructors, predominantly Yorkshire Ambulance Service staff, who deliver this invaluable training free of charge on their day off. It is an amazing opportunity to be able to train 258 pupils from Year 5 onwards with life-saving cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training” Across Europe around 350,000 people a year suffer a cardiac arrest outside of a medical environment, often in the home. Bystander CPR by non-medical persons increases survival by two to three times, however, today it is delivered in only one in five out-of-hospital Cardiac Arrest cases. Estimates suggest that by increasing this rate we may save 100,000 lives in Europe per year. CPR consists of 4 key steps: Call for help Check for signs of life Perform mouth-to-mouth Perform chest compressions To find out more about Restart a Heart Day visit the Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust dedicated website onhttps://www.restartaheart.yas.nhs.uk/The Resuscitation Council (UK) have also produced an app to help people on the go learn CPR. You can download it from your app store.
Harvest Festivals

The Pre-Prep and Whole School Harvest Festivals were fabulous occasions. The services celebrated the fantastic work that our local farming community do to provide our families with the food that graces our tables. A huge thank you to everyone who contributed to the hampers that have been donated to The Salvation Army. They are really grateful for your generosity and especially as they are very low with supplies at this time of year leading up to Christmas. Well done to all our readers who contributed beautifully to the services.
Workshop Helps Promote Self-Esteem

Pupils in Leckby are looking at how to build their resilience and boost their self-esteem ahead of the build-up to GCSE examinations. Year 9 pupils welcomed Thesan Coaching and Training to the school this week to deliver a day-long masterclass in building their self-esteem. The event coincides with the build-up to World Mental Health Day on Thursday 10 October. The series of workshops focused on building pupils’ confidence in dealing with life’s challenges and encouraging them to reflect on their strengths, both as an individual and in a team. Thesan’s Sue O’Leary-Hall led the sessions. During one of the workshops, pupils had to complete a task and overcome adversity along the way. She said: “During a workshop called ‘The Rice Game’, pupils had to work under pressure and respond to a number of scenarios from suffering significant building issues to having to pay for medical treatment!” Sue added: “Afterwards, they reflected on the relationship between their thoughts, feelings and behaviours: The pupils realised that each of us has the capacity to choose how we respond in difficult circumstances and that we are each responsible for our own behaviours.” The pupils also explored a variety of friendship scenarios, considering how they might respond to peer pressure both in school and in their social lives. The event also was complemented by an accompanying Parent Seminar which provided an opportunity for the Thesan team to share research with parents on how to develop children’s self-esteem and enabling children to rehearse potential responses for new social situations. Cundall Manor School’s Wellbeing Support Teacher, Mrs Diane Riddell, said: “It’s been wonderful to see our pupils engaging in activities that raise awareness of personal strengths alongside their mental and emotional resilience. Thesan’s tasks today have been practical and fun as well as challenging and thought-provoking. It is a great start to the week and is a superb starting point for World Mental Health Day.”
