Life Centre Trip gives fresh perspective on science
Pupils from Cundall Manor School recently had the chance to get under nature’s skin with an unforgettable trip to the Life Centre in Newcastle. Youngsters from the school, based near Topcliffe in North Yorkshire, experienced a unique viewpoint as they saw some of the world’s most spectacular animals preserved through plastination. Form 4 tutor, Hannah Sadler organised the excursion. She said: “The Animals Live exhibition was amazing, with real animals preserved to reveal various parts of their anatomy!” This unique view has been developed thanks to the science of plastination, invented by Dr Gunther von Hagens. Each animal has been painstakingly preserved allowing visitors to see what lies beneath nature’s skin in intricate detail. She added: “Life Centre was great. We watched a science show all about food and the science behind it, enjoyed the 4D motion ride, extracted DNA from a kiwi and linked woolly mammoths to their closest living relative through gel electrophoresis.” The exhibit showcases over 100 real animal specimens and allows visitors to see in detail the inner workings of animals and the systems that allow them to live, thrive and survive. The exhibition also shows how different animals have evolved both in their anatomy and their organ function to their natural habitats such as the elephant’s trunk or the giraffe’s long neck. Fun at the First Cundall Cricket Camp
Boys and girls from across the school enjoyed the first annual Cundall Cricket Camp. The 3 day camp, held at Cundall Manor School, saw over a dozen enthusiastic cricketers enjoy the start of their summer holidays and the fine weather with cricket coaching from York CC and Cundall Manor School’s very own Dan Woods. Mr Woods said: “The camp has been really fun. The children loved the games but also had the chance to learn something new.” Pre-season training for Hockey, Netball and Rugby will begin for Forms 1-6 on Thursday 1st and Friday 2nd September 2016.
